We should keep every nuclear plant on earth operating for as long as safely possible. Even if you're hugely bullish on renewables (as I am) and skeptical on economics of new nuclear (as I am), the existing fleet is a huge proportion of our carbon-free power. Keep it running.https://twitter.com/bradplumer/status/1202979427296186375 …

Turkey Point in Florida becomes the first US nuclear power plants to have its operating license extended from 60 to 80 years. Odds are, a number of others will follow: https://www.utilitydive.com/news/fpls-turkey-point-first-us-nuclear-plant-to-get-license-out-to-80-years/568593/ …

The costs for lifetime extensions aren't necessarily all that low, are they? I'm not in favor of shutting them down while operating without significant further investments, but from *vague* memory, that's not always the case?

They vary. But in many cases the extension costs are < $20 / ton of avoided co2.

I used to advocate for a nuclear green new deal until I found that the increased emissions of manufacturing was only about 3 years of current emissions (for U.S.) Then I realized that nuclear was 10X more expensive *under national mobilization implementation plans*

I'm ok with the costs in the current political climate that is slowing the deployment of cleaner alternatives.
