In newspapers this was always pretty clear (though “news analysis” pieces have blurred it there too): The A section was straight news, and then the last two pages were the opinion section, which looked quite different.

Absent the strong visual cues, I suspect a lot of readers just don’t register any distinction between a reported piece, a staff editorial, or an outside opinion essay.

And even if people recognize a piece is one or the other, there's very little good explanation about what that precisely that means on the newspaper's website. Which comes close to malpractice in my book.

Doesn't help that some journalists have their own opinion section that are pretty close to normal journalism, but aren't really (say @joshrogin).
