We are in an information overload world. Unvetted and uncondensed information is so widely available that we all nearly drown in it. Parsing out actual news / de-duplicated information is precisely what journalists can provide. Most people don't have time (also skills) for it.

I don't think it's crazy to criticize the reporting of a lot of redundant information from rallies etc. That's not to say new potential "policy" (if you can call it that) stances shouldn't be reported. But the "just because the president said it" argument is bogus as heck.
