My father nearly failed applying for a US visa. Not because of his travels, but because the procedure is nontrivial. Now his English could certainly be better, but I'd definitely not use the word "simple".

In my experience, US Embassies in Europe are very helpful to people applying for visas. I am sorry if your father's experience was different, but I am pleased he did get his visa in the end.

Oh, it wasn't really the embassy itself. Sorry for being unclear. More the application process to actually get to the appointment stage was bothersome. The website to file a DS-160 isn't particularly user-friendly. IIRC he ended up having to file twice due to mislabeled buttons.
