Professionally, too? For some games? That’d be quite exciting!

Absolutely! My plan is to add/replace core tech modules in Rust, initially with straight-C APIs on top to allow integration with legacy code, until eventually there is no legacy code anymore. I honestly no longer see any reason to use C++ other than inertia.

That’s fantastic! If there’s anything you need from us, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Thank you, I will! Several of us have been digging into Rust for over a year, we are ready and feel... energized. If this were a Disney musical we'd be about to break into song.

We’ve been experimenting a lot with rust at
@seed with our current projects. So far enjoying the journey! -
Great to know! :)

Yeah, it's been fantastic :)

Really great to hear!

Is there a book/s you would recommend for C/C+ programmers?
-
Everything you need, and more, is at https://www.rust-lang.org/

In addition to the free book online that Andrea mentions is on the website, the O'Reilly book is also very good:http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920040385.do …

Indeed - great book! I think the official book is the perfect "easy" introduction to the language, while this book is great for the deeper dive to follow.

Interesting. So tools and runtime and everything?
-
Well, where it makes sense, hopefully. Even now not all of our tools are in C/C++, and neither is game scripting, I don't expect that to change. Rust makes sense where C used to make sense, in my opinion. :)
-
Seems like DX, Maya, OS integration might have issues. Curious to hear how it goes. I tried it a few years ago and rage quit. Should try it again.
-
Rust's FFI has good support for C ABIs so calling C or getting called by C should only need a little Rust glue code.
-
Neither Maya or DX have C apis as far as I know. Maya API especially expects you to derive C++ classes to implement nodes.
-
I suspect that tools that are integrated with the likes of Maya or thin wrapper APIs would benefit the least from migration to anything other than what we have already. Would be cool if it happens someday, but definitely lowest priority.
-
It's clearly possible as they have python plugins. But yeah, pick your battles. :)
