On iOS 11 w/ Wi-Fi "disabled", auto-join for nearby networks off until "You walk or drive to a new location" or "It's 5 AM local time". WTF

Isn't it only for the swipe-up control center's button? If you use the switch in settings its actually off.

That's correct. However it's really not obvious, which is why I felt the need for a PSA ;).

It's certainly confusing, but I prefer it this way. Before there you couldn't d/c from a flaky wifi ap w/o forget or off.

A simple ternary would satisfy all, I agree that for 99.9% customers this is better, but security nerds get really picky about such changes.

A ternary switch would be best, I can see how it can sort-of improve security *but* it is too obscure. Change the colour of the BT icon?

The status is already ternary (just disable it from settings and go back to the control centre), it just needs to be accessible fro mthe cc.

Agreed but still needs visual cue in the status bar. It is incorrect for the BT icon to disappear as it is still active, just “less so”.
