There are a handful of empty pin outs in that spot though... this whole thing is getting more James Bond by the second. :-) Great work finding the spot.

Please don’t go all BadBIOS on us… there are pins in interesting places all over motherboards of many different manufacturers. You can build a complete conspiracy theory on the implications of a JTAG port.

Yeah, fun challenge: identify all the regions on a board that a trillion dollar secret spy program would not be able compromise if they modified it. Are there any? Just claiming "it was in that area" proves nothing, it's *really* hard to pick an area where it's not possible.

I dunno. Are there that many regions that you could reliably compromise the entire board’s operation with a tiny, inexpensive device that covers only, say, two wires?

Given the number of sources on this story, we’re down to three possibilities: 1. Bloomberg perpetrates massive journalistic fraud, 2. US IC perpetrates massive fraud/conspiracy, 3. It’s true. I think answering hardware questions help to evaluate whether it’s (1).

Or, 4), there is a desperate need for news to discredit China?

There are a whole bunch of plausible explanations that don't require fraud. There was no fraud involved in
#badbios or it's journalistic coverage, and dozens of experts (correctly) confirmed to reporters it was technically plausible.2 replies 0 retweets 13 likes -

The stories even followed a similar vein, "experts have been warning for years this could happen", etc, etc. "professor foobar confirmed that a bios implant could do this", "senior research blah built a pc speaker network to prove the theory", etc, etc.

Sure, I was one of the many who agreed that BadBIOS was technically possible. I just don’t think that technically possible means technically implemented. I also think that there are many alternative reasons to run a story like this one.
