People will say things that may hurt, annoy, or offend you. This may or may not be on purpose. Instead of constantly expecting the insult; do not attribute to malice what can be attributed to stupidity; grow a thicker skin.
Let us not speak of pretensions, for all outward acts can be caused by a myriad of inner states. But tell me this, if one is not aware of his actions, would you say that he is acting or that he is being acted upon?

I am not certain. It could be both. 1) He acts in accordance with how mankind has evolved to behave, culturally, as social and moral beings (that last bit is in decline, just as our general Western culture).
-
2) He is acted upon by the very same thing, that which can be called the unconscious mind, our automated functions and filter between the real world and what we actually perceive.

I'm not even at the layman level on this topic. I like Peterson's interpretation of the Bible and would recommend it, as he expands on these concepts.
