What strikes me every time I visit the South is that a region so reverent of tradition and localism is the among the most chain-storey, office-parky, commodified landscapes in America.

It’s a region built on “commodities”—> cotton and sugar and rice all made possible by mass slave Labour.

That’s what all new states and cities look like. Or even new neighborhoods of old states. Nothing interesting has been built in the US in decades. All “cool cities” are older than 1950

Their traffic engineering is crappy also. A few thousand car sensors would work wonders for their traffic lights. Maybe if they had a state income tax they could afford those - and expressways that were not toll roads.

I didn’t read a particular implication in it—but I do find it interesting. I do have a lot of thoughts about why it’s like that, though.

That's rural America all over. Their low skill local factory jobs have been replaced by low skill service jobs from corporate America over the past 20-30 years.
