Which is the greater elite sin -- miserliness or arrogance? When a beef of the Bay Area's bearded billionaires broke out, @Benioff and @Jack had a revealing argument about generosity and humility. My dispatch from Silicon Valley on Prop C, in @NewYorker. https://www.newyorker.com/tech/annals-of-technology/the-battle-of-the-big-tech-titans-over-san-franciscos-tax-for-the-homeless?mbid=social_twitter …pic.twitter.com/xfybeoHder

I think this is such an important episode, because it reveals the complications of seeking justice in what is, more and more, an oligarchy.

.@Benioff argues eloquently for greater elite generosity. But he wants to use the outsize influence that his money gives him to get voters to endorse his plan. So he is an egalitarian -- and isn't.

.@Jack wants to defer humbly to Mayor @LondonBreed's homelessness plan. But that stance coincides with a self-interested desire to avoid higher taxes.

There is little question, in my view, that America's plutocrats have too much money and too much political influence. What's so fascinating here is that two billionaires end up arguing about which is a bigger problem -- their economic hoarding or their power over public life.

This Gilded Age cartoon that I cite in the piece feels so relevant today. Two billionaires vying over the public good even as the democratic institutions we share are unceremoniously hanged.pic.twitter.com/N8KhGYDZfd

So what are Americans to do other than to beg the wealthy to support their social initiatives. Until the wealth begins to be better disbursed there is no other way to come at the problems. @Benioff is at least trying to save people's lives. Human life has to be sacred again.

The second gilded age is upon us. But this time not just the poor will suffer. Only the 1% of the 1% feel secure in the face of climate change.

Found your thread and assessment of our current society very interesting. The situation in San Francisco is being played in many communities across America. The average person has the power to vote, but little money to put towards social issues. Billionaires have the money.

We all have our tech crosses to bear. America - being a rare, modern, yet still fundamentally religious country - lets the oligarchs subject the middle and poor classes to the role of suffering for our sins. A fine history of scapegoating.

Great piece! I keep wondering, though, at a macro level isn’t donating to politicians/initiatives that would lead to higher taxation one of the better uses of billionaires’ fortunes? If nothing else to counteract all the billionaire spending to keep taxes low...

For a moment, my mind substituted another word for 'PUCK' at the top of this political cartoon. Then I realized that either word fit.
