What we learned anew this week is that, no matter how much hate, violence, and division is stoked by Trump, the political representatives of America’s right half will never quit him. Either the right in its present form or the American republic can survive. But probably not both.

For genuine conservatives out there, not Trumpists but true conservatives, this is the moment to start a new party. America needs a great center-right party that is vigilant about government overreach, mindful of tradition, wary of unintended consequences, zealous about liberty.

We know many of you don’t believe in him but are clinging for whatever reasons. America needs some of you to act on what you secretly feel.

This idea draws on the comforting notion that Trump is a one-off, unicorn-like figure who came out of nowhere. But it’s mistaken. He is a continuation of American conservative politics dating back to Reagan, likely to Nixon, and perhaps longer.

Aside from racial resentment, which is of course an established conservative trope, Trump is the logical outcome of Reagan’s outlandish claim that government is the cause of all social ills, and never the solution.

As for racism, any narrative that sees Trump arriving out of nowhere, must completely ignore the American war on drugs. It must also conveniently forget the tradition of race-bating in Republican campaigns. To say nothing of “welfare queens” etc.

Doesn’t and can’t exist. American conservatism is inseparable from slavery and neo-slavery movements (see Democracy in Chains)

I think such a party would already exist if it were going to at this point. I have an unsettling feeling that we're tumbling toward the edge of a cliff with only one choice in a few weeks to keep us from going over.

No it’s the moment to not allow crazy people to change the conversation, or change the orbit in politics. We shall not give them any such power. We will stay focused on what is in the best interest of the American people.
