      Anand Giridharadas Retweeted Steven Pinker

I grew up reading Steven Pinker with admiration. I’m sorry to say that he has made a strange turn in recent years that’s hard to explain, and now has just about discredited himself. A 10-bomb assassination attempt involving two former presidents is a “minor event.” Maybe to him.https://twitter.com/sapinker/status/1055352375899238400 …

Once again the press gets gamed, giving saturation coverage and agonized commentary to a minor event. It's not major news that a country of 325m has a few malicious jerks who (correctly) anticipate 15 minutes of notoriety with a vindictive stunt. https://nyti.ms/2JdYhmQ

A common thread of this turn is a gleeful shaming of the worries and fears of others. It has been a master class in the blindness of privilege, but delivered as though it were some brilliant lecture on that subject.

I know many people who’ve known and admired Steven who are privately alarmed and fearful for him. But for a Harvard psychologist who teaches young minds to try to explain to millions of people that being afraid of terrorist attacks is getting conned is just disgraceful.

It is more than his minimization of this particular threat--he downplays the rates of rape we have in our culture, the harm being done to transgender individuals, and the denial of how capitalism is linked to our epidemic levels of interpersonal and structural forms of violence.

Steven Pinker recently wrote a fawning blurb for a book which describes Harvey Weinstein and Matt Lauer as "casualties" of the MeToo movement, blames rape on women's "promiscuity", argues black people are underrepresented in college bc of their "culture of underachievement" pic.twitter.com/3Dhag8mDKZ

in 2012 a PhD student in philosophy submitted a complaint of sexual harassment against a professor who sent her emails asking her to have sex with him and talking about his "erect penis". Steven Pinker defended the professor. Read more re his defense here https://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/09/05/in-academia-a-fog-of-male-anxiety/ … pic.twitter.com/zH1LBE3MeI

He also has an irritating tendency to blame schools when things go bad and to stay silent about schools when things go well.

He's 'on message' and sold out. Go surf the right wing media landscape they are all saying the same thing in a manner designed to sound reasonable to people used to interacting with such media. It is a partisan propaganda effort

Hopefully the FBI can get to the bottom of this (after the Kavanaugh ordeal I have less confidence) but I wouldn't put it past the Saudis to create a false flag frenzy to distract from their horrible cover-up.
