    Anand Giridharadas Retweeted Steven Pinker

I grew up reading Steven Pinker with admiration. I’m sorry to say that he has made a strange turn in recent years that’s hard to explain, and now has just about discredited himself. A 10-bomb assassination attempt involving two former presidents is a “minor event.” Maybe to him.https://twitter.com/sapinker/status/1055352375899238400 …

Once again the press gets gamed, giving saturation coverage and agonized commentary to a minor event. It's not major news that a country of 325m has a few malicious jerks who (correctly) anticipate 15 minutes of notoriety with a vindictive stunt. https://nyti.ms/2JdYhmQ

A common thread of this turn is a gleeful shaming of the worries and fears of others. It has been a master class in the blindness of privilege, but delivered as though it were some brilliant lecture on that subject.

I know many people who’ve known and admired Steven who are privately alarmed and fearful for him. But for a Harvard psychologist who teaches young minds to try to explain to millions of people that being afraid of terrorist attacks is getting conned is just disgraceful.

to be specific the book came out in 1994; I read it in 1998. So his wrongness definitely dates from at least the early 90s

The problem is NOT that the media covers it, but how! Hyperventilating over talking to neighbours, friends and coworkers of targets, asking Obama staffers how they think he would feel about the bombs is not news. It's pornography! News is that it occurred, when-where-how-why?

It part of this elitist condescension by flying above the fray. An affectation that nothing the proles on either side cares about is worthy of their concern. Serious people see that both sides are just self interested rubes trying to get what's theirs.

His conduct during the Spelke/Pinker "The Gender of Gender and Science" debate started to sour me on his ability to see past his preconceptions, and I haven't seen much evidence that he's aware of a problem. Privilege is a hell of a drug.

In US history these pipe bombs, whether live or not, are probably top five in importance, we're talking the civil war, war of 1812, Pearl Harbor, assassinations and this and what does Trump do? He steps up as a world class tyrant- in- training (TIT) and attacks the press

Pinker does some great work but this is an example of looking at the world with too much confirmation bias. As Feynman said, “The first principle is that you must not fool yourself—and you are the easiest person to fool.”

agreed, not sure what Pinker's game is, it's similar to what Todd Gitlin has done, kind of a protector of the soft squishy liberal NPR middle.

I can understand what he is saying the news takes one topic & turns it in to a 24/7 event, they talk about to the point it turns minor in the scope of all the other crap going on in this country/the world. Once they catch the person it will turn to them & starts all over again.
