What a metaphor for America today: a private startup whose “innovation” is using the public commons as its dumping ground. Externalities are literally the scooter business model.pic.twitter.com/DjIFoqvgEK

To be fair, "using the public commons as a dumping ground" is really the car industry's model.

Cars generally park in areas that democratically elected bodies have designated for them, no? These scooters are just left everywhere.

At least here in Philly, it's not like cars get ticketed for parking in bike lanes or crosswalks, and government cars (especially the police) will park anywhere, including the sidewalk. I"d take ten scooters on the sidewalk over one police SUV.

How are scooters any different than cars - using public space for free??

Public construction of roads and parking areas legitimizes them. We have chosen to dedicate part of our commons to cars. We never decided to let scooters be left everywhere.

I guess my point is that car, bikes, and scooters all impose externalities. The tech companies may not have asked for permission, but at least the last two are much better for environment.

Drivers totally wouldn't flip their shit if a single parking space were leased to a scooter company.

In Santa Monica yesterday and these unused scooters were all over the sidewalks on Whilshire. An elderly woman crossing in crosswalk, using a walker, had to make extra effort to avoid a couple of scooters lying on their sides. Young ppl not willing to walk!!??It was really sad.

Oh you mean scooter users pay tolls and parking fees at meters and registration fees and inspection fees to pay for all the scooter roads? Excellent point.

if road users are going to start paying their fair share then car drivers are going to start paying incredibly more money to drive. not one segment of society is more subsidized than car drivers.

It is insanity. What about Nudge? Ex Googler gets 40M for biz that will Nudge employees to be nice to coworker or to call certain customer and so on all day at work. What about solving poverty? Climate change? Education?

First, this sounds like “get off my lawn” Second, there are benefits to these same public commons. More human access to, interaction in, and vitality of public commons. Last, in that picture I see 5 scooters taking up less than half of a car parking space.

We need designated docks for all these things - bikes, scooters etc. if not then people will just leave them anywhere - we all know that’s what’s gonna happen.
