We decided in the US to do away with the federal government for stuff like this. We prefer the 19th century ... And the tech barons are "surprised" there is a backlash. That's what happens when you get rid of the safety net ...

CA taxation is already among the highest in the nation. At what point do you require better governance and more effective use of funds? Why does the left always default to throwing more (ineffective) money at problems, rather than expecting better results with existing funds?

Isn’t Bemioff talking about this in support of a new tax that would support housing and services for homeless. From my read his argument supports your thesis that private giving wont do it so a tax is needed...
-
That’s exactly what
@Benioff is saying. The irony here is that Marc is pressing for just what@AnandWrites has been saying we need. But...we reduced taxes so substantially, many people now wonder aloud: “Why should anyone pay more taxes? Make those billionaires pay!”

Giving money is great. Giving money and opportunity is better. Giving money, opportunity, and a stake in something is even better.

And tax loopholes and cuts are how we arrived here.

But what happens when there are so many loopholes people of substantial wealth pay little or no taxes?

Actually in following the ideas of Ayn Rand, many million and billionaires believe they should not have to pay for this. At the same time they fund politicians who don't believe in corporate or individual taxes.

You hear the same from the arts organizations in San Francisco. No sense of giving back to the city. No sense of wanting to be in the community. Just bro culture.

I thought the US is quite rightist, and taxes for social benefits (like the homelessness problem) are a leftist thing, aren't they?

yes, or why there *used to be taxes. 5 decades ago the top tax rates were 90%. The tax rates we have now are mere shadows of what they used to be, which is reflected in our crumbling housing, school and city infrastructures

Pretty similar scenario in Seattle with some minor exceptions. But, oy—the billionaires, according to recent reporting, can't figure out where to give their money to fast enough. I can think of thousands of ways they haven't tried.
