I keep thinking about how only movement-building will save us in America. We need to become a nation of joiners again, a nation of associations that overwhelm the tinny, cynical shouts of money. So this Ben Franklin woodcut from 1754 is perfect, from Jill Lepore’s THESE TRUTHS.pic.twitter.com/YBGkv1vJ52

That’s the problem today. We have no unifying purpose to reach for, but mostly just things to be against. We need a universal message, that even goes beyond national boundaries, to pursue a better future for all.

Perhaps the threat of climate change, or rising fascism and the need for a “open and free society” can be that calling. But society is so easily divided around money and emotion, true movements have been tough to build and sustain in this modern age.

Have you read The Next American Revolution by Grace Lee Boggs? It's been one of the few things that has given me strength in the last two years. Very much about this.

"These Truths" is fantastic' eloquent and very balanced. It's probably going to be my go-to single volume American history book for a very long time.

This makes me think about heroism journalism, in which single persons are celebrated for 'making a difference.' Meanwhile, group action & movements spawn anxiety, as if only individual action is valid.

Which in turns feeds into savior complexes, in which a special, charismatic person is needed to save the day. A recipe for citizen passivity and inaction.

If you don't care about the international poor and working class you aren't on the team... that's been the movement for a while now. The reality is that Americans are not and have never collectively made it very clear to advocate this point... and are just finding out it seems.

Seems it's increasingly difficult to do that given the ease with which social media can be used to divide us, and the growing number of people trying to do so. Undemocratic government moves should be an obvious rallying point, but the response has so far been lackluster.
