I’m mildly reassured for the America of the long term, but a decade+ after the 1850s and 1920s we were involved in massive, bloody wars and deep, catastrophic economic panics. I want to hope we can shorten the cycles and lessen the pain, but I fear for our children.

Same. It's one thing to read the histories, but something else entirely to live it. We don't reap the benefits of the future in the present.
