Here's why billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg love to talk about "solutions" but never problems. In which I try out my Engine Problems vs. Crime Scene Problems theory on @karaswisher. https://www.recode.net/2018/10/3/17930990/anand-giridharadas-winners-take-all-book-changing-world-kara-swisher-decode-podcast-jeff-bezos …pic.twitter.com/mgKAlo7dvZ

Great analogy. Engineers are good at solving Engine problems. Not so good at solving Crime scene problems which ultimately are higher leverage problems. Disclosure: I'm a recovering engineer.

Forensics def helps - but as it relates to many problems - only in highlighting root/systemic design flaws. The systemic design flaw we're battling today is that the web was never designed 4 privacy/security. In fact, quite the opposite (2 support/encourage widespread adoption)

When I make a mistake at work, my first job is to fix the mistake. My second is to find out how/why I made the mistake so I can prevent future mistakes. Too many 'problem solvers' are only interested in the first part.

Interesting. When I make a mistake at work, my first job is to make sure I don't get blamed, then I worry about fixing and preventing it. I think that makes you a better person than me, and one of our problems is that too many people think like I do.

I produce 10000s of numbers a year. No one is perfect. We have an explicit three tier structure (plus peer reviewers) to catch errors.

(I've never seen an error get to an end client with our review process, so it seems to do pretty well (knock on wood))

Yes, our country rather IS like a crime scene at this point in time.

Interesting description. As it seems to acknowledge, there is a continuum here, and certainly industry has no shortage of apolitical failings that seem to hinge on failed reform that was advocated by a goodly number of its staff at the time. It is a habit of mind.
