Yesterday I heard of a searing quote attributed to @TheDesmondTutu. He supposedly said this to a room of philanthropists, but it applies to all elite helpers. "It is not your job to make the poor more comfortable in their chains. It is your job to help them break their chains."

Whether you think you're changing the world through a car-service app or a foundation or a CSR initiative or a nonprofit, this is such a powerful question to keep in mind. Are you velveting the chains or breaking them?

As much as a few claim otherwise, human beings are social animals living in an interdependent web. Those at the top benefit directly from the toil of those beneath them in resources. This extreme imbalance is a dangerous tinderbox primed for an inferno of rebellion a la Bastille.

I understand the need for empathy and added moral corporate responsibility in order to give back...I just don't see how it can be mandated with a threat of revolution

Let me be clear. I am most certainly not advocating revolution, civil war or violence of any kind. All I am pointing out is the reality of what happens when the powerful few practice oppression & make their wealth off the impoverished backs of the many. Rebellion is inevitable.

Would it not be more environmentally friendly to help recycle the chains into something more useful?

This is a tedious and unfunny joke, fwiw, but just to well-actually the well-actually a bit further it doesn't particularly matter if chains are broken or unbroken for recycling purposes.

Well, the morphine is a start. 7 days of back pain so bad sitting up was not optional without help so far, here's hoping. ;)

Yes how true! In Indian context our left elites (when not busy attending conferences in EU/US ) invent schemes that throw crumbs to poor while going along with neglect of basic education, health etc!
