One important addendum. Amazon should make clear that this policy also applies to any contractors it uses. Otherwise, the policy may result in relying more on contractors.

“We listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we want to lead,” Bezos said.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/02/business/amazon-minimum-wage.html …

I hope all those who tell every critic I know that “It’s easy to criticize. Talk about solutions” takes a moment to note that Jeff Bezos himself gives credit to critics. Naming hypocrisies is its own essential kind of solving.

Its almost an analog to Henry Ford's $5/day wage a century ago: part of the logic was that employees should be able to afford the product they make. Whilst not completely altruistic, It proved a tonic for living standards. A living wage is not only doing well but doing right.

This will probably benefit society more than Bezos charity quite quickly.

Interesting you mention McDonalds. It was the *workers* there that got the 15 buck an hour thing going. NOT Sanders and his self serving, idea stealing, decrepit old white boy claiming credit crap. Bernie Bros get no credit here.

It's been known for years that Whole Foods employees were trying to unionize. They just had a big push after the amz take over bc of what is forseen as a push towards further automation. They can pay higher wages with fewer employees.

True. But the workers should be allowed to unionize. The outlawing and demonization of unions needs to stop. America was at its strongest when workers were allowed a voice through union representation. Corporate benevolence does not strengthen the worker. It just tightens the rope

Yes it is. Buy, is $15 a living wage?
-
Depends. for one person, yes. For a family of 4, it's borderline at best.

Seems like $15 min wage would also be more harmful to their retail competitors, where amazon is better positioned to automate away low paying jobs

Laudable indeed - taking less. Does any part of you think this is a long term tactic to put more cost pressure on competitors? With Amazon's strong market position, other retailers may be more challenged to absorb the wage increase. Or is that effect indeed a "win-win" for Amzn?
