At an event yesterday, maybe four different men asked me: Why didn’t you write a book about solutions? (Women almost never ask this.) It’s a businessman’s need, this thirst for “actionable” solutions. And I’ve come to believe this need masks another, deeper one: for absolution.

The books with solutions have already been written! If you are persuaded by
@winnerstakeall, persuaded of the need for systemic reform, hundreds of experts have written thousands of books on what fairer tax, labor, social, gender, education policies would be.Show this thread -
The rush to solutions reflects this hope: that barreling past diagnosis to get to prescribing will bypass the phase of blame. Criticism takes sides. Solutions can involve all.

That they're seeking absolution & comfort seems a good explanation. I wonder also if they're seeking workarounds rather than solutions? Because real solutions may require them to give up something.

As a psychiatrist who lives and breathes this dysfunction every single day, I support both. We must recognize our anger about unfairness of the rigged system is our fault while knowing that only the individual (not the govt) can fix this.

I think time is element as well. People are trying to crush 60hrs of work into 40hrs. Being presented with Solutions means they don't even need to fully understand the problem. They want to fix & move. Many times, they'll even settle for a band-aid.

When the highest goal of polite society is to once again feel "normal" in the midst of chaos, you better be offering some fast-acting solutions. Ask big pharma, they know how instant relief is supposed to work.
