As we agonize this week about the experiences of women in America, it's important to remember that Western companies also play a big role in shaping the lives of women globally.

Consider this advertisement, in which a Western company is telling Indian women that to be darker is to be a disappointment to one's family. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4OudWoqgRo …

From the website: "The formulation contains 'white optics' which brightens the skin, giving an instant glow on application. From our consumer study, 9 out of 10# women experienced treatment like fairness from the very first use." And look at that photo in the ad.pic.twitter.com/tLK0eONQtO

How can a global leadership team that looks like this in good conscience sell Indian women — and others — a product predicated on their being too dark?pic.twitter.com/qtWc7fyapy

I'm proud
@PaulPolman and I were able to have a conversation that was high on disagreement and high on civility. But again and again, he told me I wasn't offering solutions, was focusing on niche issues. But this isn't niche.Show this thread -
This is one example why companies motivated by profit cannot be our saviors from the problems they cause. Why, instead of trying to do good, it may be more useful for companies to first do no harm.

Businesspeople love efficiency. You know what's more efficient than making millions of women feel awful about themselves, creating a foundation with the profits, while talking about "conscious capitalism"? Not doing the bad thing to begin with.

No one is being forced to purchase this product. Let the free market decide.

Not condoning; I like brown skin. I preferred my wife not buy skin whitener, but it's her choice, not mine, not yours. If i get a tan she doesn't organize a boycott on sunshine.

This is so wise to discontinue skin whitening. It's insane for women of color to whiten their skin while white women tan theirs. The beauty industry sells self-hatred to women.

It also sells the single packet hygiene products used by the poor in Asia contributing an inordinate amount to our global pollution problem.

Few years back, Unilever ran a CSR campaign in Thar (desert district in Sindh, Pakistan). CSR campaign was to teach poor women how to do make-up and use Fair & Lovely! Amazes me how the CSR campaign got multiple level of approvals (from CSR Head to CEO and the Board)

It’s exploitative but not about colour - in Australia they market tanning products just as aggressively to fair skinned women as they do whiteners to Indians, and I say that as a fair Aussie who lived in Delhi for years. I’ve seen it in both places.

I agree with you however, we really need to understand why women buy their product. What is the message the men are sending that makes them feel lighter is better? Would they use more harmful products instead? Just a thought.

Thank you for pursuing this. My take in Unilever’s “conscious capitalism” is that they had to promise that to Ben & Jerry in order to close that deal, and since then they’ve kept the talk w/o really walking the walk.
