A famous economist says rich people are what democracy needs right now. Don’t worry about their having too much power. He points to some criticism I made to the BBC, with which he disagrees. He makes some good points. But let’s look closer for a minute.pic.twitter.com/TOIgL6lkr9

The university where the economist teaches, George Mason, has been bankrolled by the Koch brothers — and it recently launched an investigation into how “the Charles Koch Foundation had been given a voice in hiring and firing professors.” https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/01/us/koch-george-mason-university.html …pic.twitter.com/CgrIULR0x9

In fact, the economist is listed as running the Mercatus Center that the Koch brothers have funded. He even serves on the board with Charles. So understand his idea that democracy needs philanthropists with the requisite salt. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/05/us/koch-donors-george-mason.html …pic.twitter.com/os5jkImD7t

Moving on, Amazon has such pervasive market and political power that the economist feels obliged to disclose, honorably, that the company’s decisions affect his spending and income and “just about every feature of my daily life.”pic.twitter.com/16ZL6sCz2z

And how can we not observe that the economist’s defense of billionaires who want to fix our democracy is in...Bloomberg? Another business founded by another billionaire who is not satisfied with his billions and wants to play a bigger role in public life. As president.pic.twitter.com/nmIN7nFlAi

When a defense of billionaires fixing democracy comes from a thinker entangled with the Kochs, financially dependent on Amazon, and published by Wannabe POTUS Bloomberg’s outlet, it doesn’t prove the thesis that democracy needs more billionaires’ help. It humiliates that thesis.

Hmm, Tyler Cowen of Mercatus, the Koch-funded center at GWU? No doubt he would be obliged to serve his overlords to say this, no?https://www.mercatus.org/tyler-cowen

Rockefeller was the richest person in world, highly resented for it. At same time, gave away a half a billion during his life. Institutions Rockefeller founded & funded include U of Chicago, Rockefeller U, Hopkins School of Public Policy, many others 🤔http://movies2.nytimes.com/books/98/05/17/specials/rockefeller-gifts.html …

True. However, it serves our interests as a participatory democracy to more closely examine the motivations of wealthy philanthropists. They can, and should, use their money to benefit society - but we must stop equating wealth with pureness of motivation.

So much better when philanthropy involves solving problems w/o ego or vanity. Few are aware today of all the philanthropic seeds Rockefeller planted nearly 100 years ago & not sure how valued they were back then, while what Bill Gates is doing before our eyes is awesome!

And yesterday Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan announced her “Innovation Advisory Council” to fix “the problems” in our city. Not billionaires, but the same underlying idea: Techies are inherently smarter than us. They can fix it with their ideas.
