Great piece. I think this could be of interest: back in 2013, I wrote about a particular odd manifestation of this trend: Wells Fargo re-branded legally mandated assistance to home-buyers as a "corporate charity"https://www.jacobinmag.com/2013/11/wells-fargos-makeover …

Is there a term like “greenwashing” for this type of transparently self-interested giving? Can’t find one. The best I’m coming up with is “charity ball-washing”... heh. But there’s got to be something better.

It reminds me of
#undercoverboss when multimillionaire ceos bestow a pittance on enslaved employees 2cover a semester of tuition or 2pay medical bills.I hate that show& how it teaches us 2b grateful & appreciative 4scraps. Pay a fair wage mf-ers & we will pay our own bills. - 1 more reply

The last administration bailed out the banks and let these thieves off the hook. Not that this president wouldn’t have done the same thing but damn can’t we have one President who’s on The People’s side?

Brilliant book and guy. Why does this scam succeed? 1) average person can’t conceive of the deceit and shamelessness within the financial world; 2) money controls media; 3) public doesn’t get difference between millions given and billions ‘earned’ (hint: it’s 1000x)

I run a poverty related group on Facebook and I am posting many of your threads and links lately (and of course had preordered your book.) I'm so glad you are shining a light on this.

Great piece. And it shows up also in things like CitiBike which costs nothing for Citi but gives them the veneer of caring for the city and the cost of us thinking they are somehow benevolent while they fleece us and dodge taxes.

That picture is a beaut of photojournalism. You almost don’t need the story (almost - I’m a writer, let’s not get carried away).
