.@JeffBezos just announced his long-awaited philanthropic plan. Two quick observations, and more thoughts later.https://twitter.com/JeffBezos/status/1040253796293795842 …

It starts with the question, “Where’s the good in the world, and how can we spread it?” It’s a generous question. But one of the problems I detail in @winnerstakeall is that asking that question can marginalize large categories of important solutions.

I would also invite @JeffBezos to ask, “Where’s the bad in the world, and how can we stop it?” Spreading what’s good is a useful method in business. But a savagely unequal society is a crime scene, and we must do more than scale up good. We must stop the crime and seek justice.

So on the issues of homelessness and education that he targets, it is terrific to scale up these good programs. But imagine if his kind of resources could go after the root causes of those problems — in our zoning laws, our unequal public school funding, our tax system.

The second observation is that @JeffBezos is rich enough to dazzle the world by becoming a traitor to his class in the way he gives back. He doesn’t need to solve problems in the symptom-treating, win-win way. He can afford to go for the jugular of the systems that harm people.

And what better issue to start on than really helping to think about his own backyard and the future of work and workers. What will it mean to protect workers in these new times? What new regulations do we need for the Prime/gig/automated economy?

There is a palliative approach to this problem of precarious, squeezed employment. But there is also potential for real change. The reinvention of unions. A new wave of labor reforms like the ones that brought us the 8-hour workday and job safety, etc.

Givers often ask what they can do. But imagine if @JeffBezos set an example of asking what is rarely asked: What am I already doing? How am I involved in the problems? What could I do to solve them for all, at the root, even if that means my world, not just the world, changing?

Yes, any person's actions should be looked at on all fronts. In fairness, your NYT op-ed gave universal pre-school as an e.g. of what should be happening & so $1bn to free high-qual pre-school for poor seems pretty good as a 1st step? If exec like AMZN, could be quite catalytic?

With the $2B #Day1Fund @JeffBezos is essentially saying it will improve what the City of Seattle has been unable to do, despite a $6B annual budget (that’s up 50% from 8 years ago).https://openbudget.seattle.gov/#!/year/default

Anand, I love your question. “The world” to be changed by Bezos in his statement is conceptualized as exterior to “his world”. A way of thinking structured by a schism, where what’s interior and exterior to his sphere don’t connect aside from his power to control them separately.

Fascinating thread, thank you. Amazon is global though. The question for the business then is ‘can we can afford to solve for this globally while also out-competing global competition?’

Lost in all of your little screed was the fact that Jeff Bezos does not care what you or anyone that isn't a Federal regulator thinks of him.
