A wise critical review of @WinnersTakeAll by @DavidCallahanIP on his @InsidePhilanthr blog.
TL;DR: David calls Bloomberg “an incredibly important change agent” because he backs good causes, whereas for me he’s still an oligarch with no interest in truly upending a cruel economy.https://twitter.com/DavidCallahanIP/status/1039995325736525826 …

The review makes some reasonable points, but fighting for $15 does not a class warrior make. And $ for gun control/global warming is not inconsistent with giving to causes that support the status quo. Also, Tom Steyer’s vanity impeachment commercials leave much to be desired.
-
Plus David largely leaves out the concept that being able to make these huge donations is itself the problem - powerful people tell us what is worth investing in, which is inherently the problem. We want to be empowered to make these decisions!

The Patriotic Millionaires example was interesting. Rich folks "united in their concern about the destabilizing concentration of wealth & power in America" doesn't mean those same rich folks are actively breaking the concentration of *their* own wealth & power.

Bloomberg supported the arts as mayor. Helped them thrive. He did not tell us what to do. And the bike lanes. I feel like he provided seed $$. No promise that he alone could fix it. It feels a little bit more like he knew he was lucky and it was his duty to give back.
