Does Nike simply want to apply its brand to Kaepernick’s campaign for social justice, or is it interested in learning to be more like Kaepernick?

I wondered the same thing about Goldman Sachs’s 10,000 Women program. Why merely mentor the women and use them for branding? Why not get some of those honest business owners, who have never helped cause a financial crisis, to mentor Goldman in *their* values?

If Nike wants to be more like Kaepernick, it should follow his example and publicly name some foundational beliefs for which it is truly willing to sacrifice everything. That would be a significant statement, because it would throw shareholder primacy out the window.

Some may say Kaepernick is being co-opted. But I would be open to hearing if Nike has any intentions of having him co-opt the company instead. Having him change it. Why hire a guy merely to endorse you when you can get him to teach you?

Otherwise, Nike is standing up for the idea that the police should treat with dignity some of the very people it refuses to treat with dignity itself.
