My #LaborDay hope: that ordinary Americans take change back from the winners; and that more of the winners admit to a system that serves them at others’ expense and take the crucial first step to changing it — stepping off of others’ backs.pic.twitter.com/H5gnydCSav

On #LaborDay, I think of a massage therapist I wrote of who made $90 in some two-week pay periods and $700 in others, who struggled to make an adult life with that uncertainty, because of an issue afflicting millions: companies that jerk around workers’ hours to keep up profits.

Before anyone richsplains to you that we can all rise together, win-win-win, understand her situation. She is kept in poverty so that the massages are kept cheap or (more likely) so that wage bills are kept low and profits high, and investors kept happy. Her loss is others’ win.

If we can move into the autumn with one idea in mind, let it be this: all is not a win-win, no matter how often we are told so; and what it will take to make America work again for most people will cost elites something. No such thing as free social reform.

Trickle-down economics was the lie of the 1980s. Trickle-down social change is the lie of our time. Nothing worth having trickles down from above.pic.twitter.com/3lyekVwMzP

It's freaking middle class people making $90k that'll cry if they raise prices The rich rich probably go to the Four Seasons for a massage The enemy of the poor is often the upper middle class not the rich rich

Incorrect. It's obvious you do not spend time with rich people. Most did not get rich by spending too much money. Many times the rich see a larger discount on items than the middle class. It's part of being in the club.

Who wants cheap nannies, low cost restaurant prices, Amazon over store clothing to save five bucks, low taxes and mortgage tax deductions (which the poor don't get as they don't own) The middle class is enemy #1 of the poor
