    The targeted businesses have long been identified online & by police as places where sex work & possible exploitation regularly occurred — & where Asian women could be found. The crime cannot be separated from the racist hypersexualization of Asian women.

    It's worth noting that even while some politicians were touting the benefits of free trade, there was a substantial amount of protectionism built into the system (e.g. 25% truck tariffs, anti-dumping tariffs, Buy America, Jones Act, etc.).

    What has really changed is the nature of modern trade and economies. Growing services employment and trade. Emerging economies but mostly China. Technology allowing firms to source from anywhere, and manufacture with less workers.
