Amazing story from Paul Volcker's memoir . . .the 1971 Nixon shock was supposed to include US withdrawal from the 1965 auto pact with Canada. . . but a State Dept official tore off the last page of the press release mentioning it and it was forgotten!

Another chart showing the fall off in U.S. imports this year maps to a fall off in U.S. demand for goods (largely for fixed investment, though inventories are a factor in investment too). That's why the fall in imports hasn't corresponded to strength in US manufacturing

For workers and labor, the story is far from over. Hoping that some reporters spend the time and energy on the next phase, and what happens with labor rights, jobs and the future of real people, not just corporate profitability.
