We watched HEAVY METAL for the first time yesterday and I need to be clear that I'm fine with cartoon violence and explicit sexuality, but that movie sucked. Thus ends our exploration into "What animated films are there besides Roger Rabbit, anyway?"

Heavy Metal kinda felt like they thought the sex and violence was *enough* (and also the Cool Aesthetic) and that they didn't need to also have a real, actually engaging PLOT.

Compare that to, like, NINJA SCROLL (1993) which was the first anime film I ever watched (!!) (so long ago!) which also has violence and nudity, AND/BUT it also has an actual good plot. Therein lies a big goddamn difference!!

You can't just slap a cool SciFi/Fantasy aesthetic down and expect the setting to carry the viewer without a plot. And COOL WORLD made very similar mistakes.

Contrast ROGER RABBIT, which would be a fine story and a good plot even if all the animated characters were suddenly played by live actors. The animation isn't a gimmick to carry the story; it's a seasoning to *enhance* the story.

Have you seen Wizards from the early 70's? Huge authoritarian vibes and tons of violence. I can't believe I thought it was great at one point.

I have not!
