I'm not saying this to pick on Thomas, to be clear, but rather that a lot of these "savings" people keep telling me about sound about as real to me as a sitcom family. Dry cleaning is something I see in movies, not a normal part of my daily life.

People actually dry clean stuff?

I think a boyfriend once sent a big comforter out for dry cleaning because his washer wasn't big enough? Otherwise, I've never known someone who did.

I'm also actually spending MORE on gas, because instead of using transit pass (the cost of which was mostly covered by my company), I'm driving places I'd normally take the subway to.

In my family, we've paid more for gas. Since public transit and frequent errands don't seem like a good idea, we're doing all the groceries in a single big shop once every 7-9 days with the car. Rather than a quick trip every second day on foot.

I used to take a bus home from work that dropped me at the grocery store, shop for 1-2 days worth, and walk home. Now I drive to the same store and try to shop for a week.
