Great article, and it highlights a number of reasons, beyond the fact that all workers should be paid at least the minimum wage, why we should pay prisoners properly instead of pennies per hour.

“In 2018, the U.S. spent $24 billion on immigration enforcement and only $2 billion on labor enforcement. That’s twelve times more to hunt down immigrants than keep us safe on the job.”

We all know that arresting and jailing people who use drugs does not decrease drug use. So why are we doing it? I keep hearing people say, "there has to be a consequence." Does there? Couldn't there just be help for people who need it?

“The need for collective brand action and the role of suppliers is no doubt relevant. But in the ultimate analysis, nothing prevents a brand from cleaning up its buying practices to reduce its complicity in abusive cost-cutting by factories”

Incredibly disappointing to see the only GCC government to have somehow achieved Tier 1 status in the Trafficking in Persons report, unanimously vote against a legislative amendment to better guarantee employers pay workers on time

Arizona’s incarcerated firefighters push for legislation that recognizes their labor by reducing their sentences. Unlike other states, Arizona offers minimal early release credits for the prisoners it sends to fight its wildfires:

So many good points in this thread, including the problem with focusing too much on law enforcement and calling out hotels and airlines that have sex trafficking campaigns but are not examining the labor exploitation of their own housekeeping staff and ground crews.

"It’s a labor issue because those same people who work for pennies in prison, once they have served their time, find themselves locked out of the job market by employers who screen applicants for felony convictions."

The death penalty is unfair and unjust in every single case.

"It has everything to do with race...with where your crime occurred, what county, and who happened to be the prosecutor. Those are the factors that drive the death penalty. The death penalty is unfair and unjust in every single case." - Cassandra Stubbs, Director, ACLU Capital Punishment Project

"mass incarceration means literally millions of people work jobs in prisons for pennies an hour—a hidden world of coerced labor here in the United States. And when some people are forced to work for close to nothing, all workers’ living standards are pushed down"
