Just wondering where the pool of PhD graduates would come from....?

Same place as always....? I think we'd still be in the core businesses of teaching and training students -- just not having to spend so much of our time chasing after grants and "selling" our research in pursuit of the dollar.

What do you think of a research structure where practitioners/lay people bring their problems and they get sent to appropriate scientists? Probably wouldn't work well for hard sciences and theorists would have to be integrated.
-
Sounds like a neat idea in theory, but given the extremely poor accuracy with which laypeople generally view my work I'd worry that the signal/noise ratio would be terrible and the vast majority of problems would be inapplicable or too poorly specified to be relevant.

Don't the French CNRS, the German Max Planck, Fraunhofer and DLR institutes do this to a large extent? Or is the effort they put in supplementing their activities with soft money to the detriment of their research?
-
I don't really know for sure but I thought at least some of them had relatively few senior continuing positions and mainly just lots of shorter-term postdocs?

So true! We spend years getting an education that allows us to carry out complex technical work, resources both material and immaterial are devoted to providing us with this education, and then we are supposed to turn into full-time fundraisers and spokespersons for our labs.

It's the weirdest system ever, isn't it? So few of the selection pressures map onto the actual job responsibilities, especially at the associate / full prof level.
