Any suggestions from @HislopMD @gorskon @AmyGDalaMD @RogueDadMD @theblondeMD on how to approach/discuss with a doctor, that pseudoscientific bullshit is not something to endorse?https://twitter.com/SmilesbyPayet/status/1182738929197502467 …

Hey #medtwitter , I just found out that my PCP supports acupuncture & similar alternative medical practices. This was quite disappointing to hear. Any suggestions on how to begin a dialogue? As our family PCP for 6 years, this is the 1st time something like this came up.

I'd probably inquire more about the reason for such practices...if they are using acupuncture for hypertension, that's a big miss. But if they're recommending it for something like chronic pain in patients who ask about it, I think that's not a completely fireable offense.

If medical treatment has not proved effective, why not try alternatives? I was constantly catching cold as a child. At the age of 7, a chiropractor friend offered to see if he could help. My parents allowed it and after a few treatments I stopped getting sick so frequently.

What’s funny is that acupuncture has been routinely found ineffective. Placebo effect is a thing. Chiropractors love it, too.
