Close watchers of California's electricity mix may note that its own data shows a lower number, closer to 32%. Discrepancy is due to a few reasons, largely relative inclusion of hydropower. Thank you to @comstockery for helping explain this!

Not to downplay the renewables story in CA, but my guess is that the figure you show is all renewables, including large hydro. The big uptick in renewables and downtick in natural gas gen last year in CA was largely due to the end of a 5-year (climate change related) drought.

That's the electricity California *generated.* What California used includes imports, and thus coal.

19% of CA 2016 consumption was renewables generated in CA. Add hydro to that. A fair % of “CA” renewables, including the majority of wind, is renewables from out of state.
