Excited to share the first outcome of a new collaboration on malaria transmission dynamics We ask: in an increasingly connected world, how do neighbors and travel influence disease elimination strategies?

Based on the content of my mentions, I feel like I need to further debunk crazy / HIV conspiracy preprint. This is a thread doing so. 1/9

But it warrants a response from geneticists. Is anyone already organizing one?

The Leffler Lab is launching! We have opportunities for grad students and postdocs to work on human and macaque evolutionary genomics, malaria adaptation, structural variation, and more -- see for further info and get in touch!

Lots of discussion of R0 (basic reproduction number) for , but maybe useful to explain how to calculate it and where uncertainties come from. R0 is context-specific, and can vary in different populations. It is not a measure of virulence (which is disease severity). 1/x

Here's a PLINK GWAS on simulations of populations in continuous space where the phentoype is just a noisy transformation of location. Even with pretty high dispersal and 10 PC's, you get some pretty convincing LD peaks! (From our preprint )

When reviewing/editing any work of science I try to ask "what is the minimum amount of extra work required to make this good enough". Often I get the feeling scientists ask for a lot of extra work as a way to show how seriously & thoroughly they did their job as reviewers/editors

It’s faculty recruiting season at many universities. One of the most opaque and intimidating parts of this process for applicants is the chalk talk. A thread:

If I see or hear the term “population bottleneck” one more time from scientists to describe colonial events that resulted in the forced genocide of Indigenous people (or any group), I am going to scream. Don’t whitewash meaningful events under the guise of objectivity.

There’s a simple way to fight familiarity bias. When you read a good paper with an author you don’t know, especially if they’re junior, take a minute to look them up, get to know their work, cite them, and keep them in mind for events you organize. In short, remember the name!

This is true, but here’s my PSA: you can and should just email people whose work/lab you’re interested in, at least in academia, to ask about opportunities they might have. Previous connection isn’t necessary.
