Thread about one of my fave papers in innovation, Recombinant Growth by Martin Weitzman. MW starts with the assumption that innovation is about combining distinct technologies/ideas in a novel way. Combination takes R&D resources, and is not guaranteed to succeed. 1/10

This is really good. When you're trying to do something new and it's not working, you don't know whether that's because it's impossible, or you just got some minor detail wrong.

So, let's say it's the 1840s, and you're tasked with building a suspension bridge at Niagara Falls, spanning a gorge almost 800 feet across and over 200 feet deep. How do you get the *first* metal cable across?

Italy is known for tomatoes. Thailand for chilies. Germany for sauerkraut. But tomatoes originated in Peru. Thailand imported chilies from Central America. Sauerkraut started in China. Everything is a remix—and the world is better for it. Share what you know. Learn from others.

Here's why the circle has 360 degrees: around 2400 B.C., the ancient Sumerians noticed the Sun's annual path across the sky was ~ 360 days. In order to track the Sun's motion, they decided to divide the circle in 360 degrees.
