In the 60s, my parents left their families behind in India and Africa and came to the U.S. with the dream of giving their kids an education and economic opportunity. Eventually, they opened a daycare center in Cleveland that served about 60 kids and 8 teachers at any given time.

They ran it with love for 25 years – it was my mother’s full-time job as the day-to-day director, and my dad’s nighttime job as the accountant (he had a PhD in Physics but learned his bookkeeping along the way!).

It was because of their successful business that they were able to put my brothers and me through college. My parents sacrificed all those years to serve their customers and employees, and to create opportunity for us.

I distinctly remember all of their hard work through the years: my mom doing payroll with paper and pencil on the kitchen table each Thursday night, my dad cutting checks late at night in his basement office, both always thinking about certain parents not paying on time,

supplies, employee tax questions, ways in which they could spread the word about the day care. And today I imagine what Square could have done for them: enabling more customers to join and pay in a timely manner, helping my parents better manage cash flows,

and making it easier for them to market and expand their business, and communicate with customers. Perhaps with Square, my parents could have had a night off once in a while or slept a bit easier.
