The Irish leaders’ debate is really quite shocking. The three leaders have a detailed grasp of complex welfare and tax issues, they are polite and courteous, they admit mistakes, they say sorry. They might even be largely honest. Why is all that possible in Ireland but not here?

These new language directives for the Foreign Office should work well, provided everyone UK diplomats interact with overseas is a fucking idiot without internet access.

Today's column is about how ridiculous it would be if Remainers now banged on about trivia for decades before growing old and bitter and casting a spiteful vote which was transparently against their own interests. Because imagine doing that, eh?

The worst part of tonight's nonsense is the Iowa caucus non-event stepped on one of the biggest news stories in a while, which is that we found out tonight that TRUMP HAD A SECRET MEETING WITH THE CROWN PRINCE OF SAUDI ARABIA AT HIS (TRUMP'S) HOUSE A WEEK BEFORE THE 2016 ELECTION

Who cut 21,000 police officers? Who cut 24,000 police staff? Who closed 600 police stations? Who cut CPS? Who privatised the Probation Service? Who closed our courts? Who cut the Prison Service? Who claimed it’s not about numbers?

Lots of questions about the transitional period: what is it, why have it, what good does it do etc... So here is a short thread summarising the key points (drawn from my full analysis as published in Common Market Law Review):

Climate Emergency Advisory Committee requests c£50k for their first year of work. That’s 20% of what we spend subsidising private cars’ parking in Vale’s car parks. Very good from and his CEAC

2016: “No-one's threatening our place in the single market” “We'll have the exact same benefits as EU membership” “We can have a deal better than we have now" 2020: “We’ll have an Australia deal which is basically WTO terms” But remember, people knew exactly what they voted for

Damian Green, once the safest pair of tablecloths in the cabinet, now rises to call the journalist walkout yesterday an “outbreak of snowflakery.”

I know it's hard to do, but we *all* have to shake off this assumption that, deep down, the Tory Party is going to take an economically pragmatic approach to Brexit.

This, worryingly, appears to be the playbook. Act on the fringes of lawfulness, deliberately provoke legal challenge, use opportunity to spread propaganda about “biased courts” and “politicised judges”. Every day this government tugs at a thread of the rule of law.

There’s no schadenfreude to be had watching journalists who thought warnings about Johnson’s hatred of scrutiny & accountability were hysterical end up on the receiving end of it.

Some facts: 1. Amman grew up and was radicalised while Johnson’s party was in govt 2. Amman was sentenced under legislation in force while Johnson’s party was in govt 3. Amman was imprisoned and “rehabilitated” in prisons whose budget was cut by 40% by Johnson’s party in govt

People are asking why the EU is asking the government to sign up to level playing field clauses to get zero tariff. The thing is...this was entirely expected and I wrote about it in November. It's a great thing for those who voted to leave. Let me explain...

    1. Since we’re having a general election, let me show you how a politician argues we should be removing environmental and food standards, but without actually saying so.
