I've been wondering the same thing. Two of them popped up near me recently.

2... The way to look at it is as a disruptive innovation that found a foothold because the worse things get for hospitals, the more compelling the retail clinic alternative becomes.

3... One final thing to note is that early on a big barrier was concern over quality. It took a while for evidence to show that retail clinics were just as good at what they do, but now that hurdle has been overcome and the big players are willing to invest.

2... They indeed have had to overcome the stigma of quality of care, driven to some extent by the "doc in the box" thinking that these clinics have been labeled with.

The question is really about FSEDs which are departments of hospitals.
