Attitude replaced inquiry. The state of knowledge is 100% our fault. We failed (we = born before 1975) to insist schools provide balanced economic and historical curricula. We permitted factual journalism to be replaced by pseudo-investigative journalism. We..(going for a hike!)

I'd also say that we're seeing the influence of postmodernism playing out. Because postmodernism claims there is no objective truth it unleashes subjectivism. As Jonathan Haidt says in The Coddling of the American Mind feelings now rule over reason.
