the dole still exists in ireland and it's a life saver for all my artist friends who live there. not really holding them back from anything other than crushing levels of poverty.

The dole was a vital lifeline for Britons without work, and the word always signified something that no-one wanted, but which some needed. It was only pejorative amongst those who could afford to live without it, and the thoughtless right-wing who have no sympathy with the poor.
