I disagree with Shapiro on this one. I knew my parents and grandparents and what they experienced in the 1930's. FDR could never have been a great war leader, as he was, without having gained the trust and affection of the vast majority of the American people in the 1930's. For many FDR represented hope. In purely economic terms Amity Shlaes makes a very good case.
