I want to add; I admire Walter Reuther greatly. Conservatives should not vilify past leaders, they should learn from them.

Well, with all due respect, Amity, not entirely. He put up the money to start the SDS. That doesn't explain radicalism in our time or the 1960s. But, like travelers with coronavirus, it helped seed future outbreaks.

Just finished “The Great Society: A New History.” What a fantastic book. Having lived through the LBJ era, as a kid, and having it shape my viewpoints as a conservative, I thought I knew about that era. Boy, was I wrong! Your book was revelatory. Especially about Reuther.

He seems like a complicated guy. But after I read your book, I have to admit I learned to respect him, too. He was a true believer, and utterly dedicated to the labor movement in all its complex glory.
