Reading @AmityShlaes Coolidge again...in 1925 or 1926...the Mississippi River overflowed its banks in some parts 60 miles wide. Flooding up & down the valley, a national crisis. Little or not fed help in beginning. The states handled it. No GW lobby.
awww; what's interesting is that the flood of Vermont came after that...Coolidge probably wanted to go to rescue his home states, but he didn't. Federalist restraint.

It was interesting to read that FDR was of the same view initially, but later relented. Of course, we know what came after that... Hoover, New Deal, etc...and of course the current Fed deficit and state of our infrastructure.
