Well, for one general answer: The 1960s "peace," "love," "youth," movement killed civility. Nothing nastier, not even the 1970s feminists who pitted half the population against the other.

The rise in government dependency killed civil society . When you can depend on the government to house, feed, and provide medical care, there is no incentive for socially correct behavior. There's no penalty for anti-social behavior.
