Very few people have described me as the sort of person with whom they'd want to have a beer. But in my defense, saying that classical liberalism hasn't had a great leader since Gladstone isn't the same as saying classical liberalism is passe.

It's an interesting question: The tenets of classical liberalism remain very attractive to many voters but the 'leaders' associated with it have tended to be politically unpalatable or out of step with the moment . . .
