Good morning! For the last several years, I've worked with my colleagues @tacraigie and Cameron Kimble on a @BrennanCenter research paper studying how mass incarceration entrenches poverty and inequality. We reach a number of sobering conclusions. First, the criminal justice system impacts more people, more seriously, than previously thought. We estimate around 45 ***million*** people have a misdemeanor conviction. (This is a rough figure due to limited available data.) (2/6)
Second, those who have been to prison earn around half as much, over the course of a lifetime, as socioeconomically similar people who have not been to prison. Tragically, people of color bear those burdens disproportionately. (3/6)pic.twitter.com/GREgUb4nlg
Third (and this one surprised me), the impact of even a misdemeanor conviction can be severe, reducing annual earnings by more than 15 percent. While that pales in comparison to the effect of prison, it is serious and, for families on the edge of poverty, devastating (4/6).
Taken together, we show that this country's inequalities -- all of which have been worsened by the coronavirus pandemic -- are exacerbated by mass incarceration, making reform a priority even and especially while we consider other economic rescue measures. (5/6)pic.twitter.com/SOPlBAV5wR
