Research consistently shows that people who are already poor are more likely to be convicted of crimes & end up in prison — after which they’ll find it harder to get a new job and escape poverty. Mass incarceration targets what @Chris_arnade calls the “back row,” not the “front.”

And criminal justice debt traps people in poverty, but cities rely on it to fund their courts anyways, even though raising money through taxes would be fairer *and* more efficient. Reforms to end that practice help average Americans, not a “ruling class.”https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/steep-costs-criminal-justice-fees-and-fines …

Tucker hopes to turn criminal justice reform into yet another divisive culture war issue. That would be tragic. Criminal justice is one of the last bipartisan issues, where conservative lobbyists can (and do) find common cause with community organizers. We cannot lose that unity.

On to Tucker’s crime data. He blames DA Krasner for murder rising in Philadelphia. But (tragically) homicides in the city have been increasing for years, largely *stabilizing* this year. It’s far too early to judge Krasner’s record. But that’s a good sign.https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/takeaways-2019-crime-data-major-american-cities …

Tucker says murder has spiked “across the country, in city after city... compared with just five years ago.” That’s misleading or untrue. Homicide rates are near record lows nationally. If they’re above 2014 levels that’s because 2014 saw the lowest homicide rate in DECADES.pic.twitter.com/l5AtBS3oDm

In fact, according to the FBI, major cities saw higher-than-average declines in homicide rates in 2018 (the last year with full, national data available).https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/preliminary-analysis-2018-fbi-uniform-crime-report …

It’s possible & important to talk seriously about violent crime. That’s not what Tucker is doing. Here’s a piece from
@CNN offering honest analysis of major city crime rates without the fearmongering. In analyzing crime, context matters. Panic hurts.https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/02/us/chicago-us-cities-gun-violence/index.html …Prikaži ovu nit

also saying this is not what voters want flies in face of so many electoral results in recent years. Philly, Boston, NC, MN, Virginia, Dallas, San Fran, St Louis... When there's choice, voters frequently opting for reform. Not always, of course, but conventional expectations off.
